Abstract

910,834. Powder sprayer. WARHURST, W. J. April 5, 1960 [Jan. 6, 1959], No. 478/59. Class 69 (3). A reciprocatory plunger 29, grooved at 41, feeds powder from a container 2 through an orifice 50 to a space within a plate 38 which houses a nozzle 16 through which air is intermittently emitted to spray the powder from an outlet 39. Compressed-air is intermittently supplied to a union 20 and flows via a valve 18 and duct 22 to one side of a diaphragm 23 to which one end of the plunger 29 is attached. Forward movement of the plunger is effected by the air pressure, and return movement by a spring 28; as shown, the plunger slides in a liner 30 provided with a flexible sealing sleeve 36. The plunger stroke and hence the number of powder extracting grooves that can pass from one side to the other of the hole 50 are regulated by a shaft 25 with an enlarged head which is urged against the diaphragm by a spring 32. The forward position of the shaft is regulated by a knob 34 having a notched cam surface engaging a tooth 43. Some of the compressed-air fed to the union 20 flows through ducts 15, 14, chamber 12 and nozzle 16; air is drawn into an opening 40 by the air flow from the nozzle, and entrains the powder in the plunger grooves and carries it from the outlet 39 together with the main air stream. The air supply to the chamber 12 reciprocates a plunger 11 connected to a diaphragm 8 to prevent compaction of powder in the container.
