A sewing-machine throat plate, raised above the work-supporting surface, is surrounded by an annular member the bottom surface of which rests upon the work-supporting surface, and the top surface of which is curved upwardly from the bottom surface to the level of the throat plate. The annular member is employed in conjunction with an arrangement similar to that described in Specification 808,356, in which a throat-plate 24 is engaged with respective slots 36 formed in a pair of plungers 32. Pins 38, slidable in the plungers, are adapted to raise the latter and the throat plate from the level of the work-supporting surface 17 for ordinary stitching, to a position in which the feed dog 22 is masked for darning or embroidery. In its raised position the throat plate may be surrounded by an annular member 51 which rests on surface 17 and has a curved outer edge 59. To fit member 51, a sliding plate 43, affording access to the looptaker 46, is drawn outwardly to the dotted line position and member 51 is placed on the throat plate in the dotted line position and is slid forwardly to the full line position when lugs 56 on member 51 enter a recess 57 in the throat plate. Plate 43 is then pushed inwardly till its inner edge 66 engages a corresponding shoulder 67 on member 51 to force the lugs 56 into the recess 57.
