Abstract

910,052. Submersible vessels. SPIROTECHNIQUE. July 21, 1960 [July 22, 1959], No. 25456/60. Classes 113 and 114. A self-propelled submersible vessel has a sealable hull with at least two mercury containing cylinders 30, 31, Fig. 3, connected by a duct 32, 32<SP>1</SP> disposed substantially at the opposite ends of an equatorial diameter forming the axis of advance of the hull and a valve 33 for controlling the displacement of the mercury from one cylinder to the other. The cylinders house pistons 35, 36 movable by oil under pressure in chamber 40 (or 38) to expel the mercury in chamber 39 (or 37) into the chamber 37 (or 39), the pistons 35, 36 moving in opposite directions. In an emergency the valve 33 connects ducts 32, 32<SP>1</SP> to outlet 34 to permit simultaneous and rapid expulsion of the mercury in both cylinders, oil under pressure being admitted simultaneously to the chambers 38 and 40. The vessel has propelling and controlling nozzles 41, 42, 41<SP>1</SP>, 42<SP>1</SP> as described in Specification 910,051. Immersion is controlled by a water reservoir 15, Fig. 2, in connection with a bottle 16 and a handle 13<SP>1</SP> for releasing weights attached to a hook outside the shell of the vessel. Discharge of water from the reservoir is normally by electric pump driven from accumulators 25-29. Specification 910,053 also is referred to.
