Abstract
547,967. Perforating. COX, P. July 3, 1941, No. 8411. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Bolt-like projectiles, to be driven through a steel shell or plate particularly for use under water as described in Specifications 141,406, [Class 83 (iv)], and 474,368, are made hollow to serve as connectors for the passage of gas or fluid into or out of the sunken submarine or other vessel &c. The armour piercing nose 4, Fig. 1, is screwed into the forward end of the connector 1 and maintains it sealed until ready for a hose or other connections to be made at 6 when it is unscrewed by a screw driver passed through the connector to engage the slot 4a. In a modification the nose is a drive fit in the end of the bore and will usually be disengaged by momentum when the connector is arrested by the plate 5. If it does not disengage it may be drifted out. In this case the connector is sealed by a plug 7 as in Fig. 3, which may form a connection with the rod of the actuating piston that engages the barrel of the gun. The nose may be integral with the connector outlets being provided at 2a. The external screw thread may be continued to a point where it will engage with the plate 5. The connector may serve for the passage of a telephone or power cable sealed by a gasket 9a and cap 9. The cable may be twin or single, in the latter case a separate connector is used for each pole. A small lamp may be attached to the cable and passed through the connector for emergency lighting.
