Abstract

909,936. Waveguides. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. July 11, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 25110/61. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (a)] In a klystron at least one resonator is tuned by a threaded member 66 which is threadedly engaged by an actuating nut 66 and having one or more deformable portions (radial slots) to enable it to be clamped in position by a clamping nut 69. The tuning mechanism, Fig. 4, is of elliptical cross-section and comprises a tuning diaphragm 62 actuated by the above mechanism. The locking deformation is achieved by nut 69. The input and output waveguides have ceramic windows. The resonator grids are radial vanes projecting at one side of an annular frame comprising a U-sectioned ring of Ni or steel containing a second ring of nickel plated copper wire or a solid annular block on which the grid vanes are mounted. Alternatively the resonator grids may be constructed as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,738,438. Cooling fins are provided for the collector and resonator body structure of the tube. An evacuation tube with four pumping holes is located at the far end of the collector structure. The collector also houses a conical member which disperses any returning secondary electrons.
