Abstract

Polycarbonates are made by first reacting a dihydric phenol free from C- mono or dibeta alkenyl substituents with a 1,2-monoepoxide of an ethylenic hydrocarbon to produce a bis(beta-hydroxyether) of said dihydric phenol and then reacting this ether with an aliphatic or aromatic bis-chloroformate. The dihydric phenol may be an alkylidene or a cycloalkylidene bis-phenol (many specified) or it may be 4,41-thio-bis(3-methyl-6-tert. butyl phenol) or 3,4-(4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl)-hexane. Specified epoxides are ethylene-, propylene-, butylene-, butadiene- and cyclopentadiene-monoepoxide. In an example, the bis-hydroxy ether obtained from 1 mol. of bis-phenol A and 2 mols. of monoepoxycyclopentadiene is reacted with the bischloroformate of bis-phenol A in the presence of methylene chloride and trimethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide; the product is then cured by heating it with sulphur. The products are useful in the manufacture of laminates, metal coatings, electrical insulation materials, potting compositions, films and fibres.ALSO:A hydroxyether of bis-phenol A (p,p1-isopropylidene diphenol) is made by reacting 1 mole of bis-phenol A with 2 moles of monoepoxycyclopentadiene at 35 DEG C. in the presence of methylene chloride.
