Abstract

High molecular weight thermoplastic polycarbonates based on bisphenols contain also the residues of 0.01 to 2 mol per cent of an at least one trihydric or higher polyhydric phenol and 0.1 to 8 mol per cent of at least one monohydric phenol, the percentages being based on the mols of the bisphenol. If the polycarbonates are made by the phosgene or bis-chloroformate method, monohydric phenols must be added to the reactants. However, if the polycarbonates are made by the transesterification process using diaryl carbonates, the monohydric phenol component of the polycarbonate may be derived from the phenol liberated by the diaryl carbonate not all of which is removed from the reaction mixture. Specified reactants are: Bisphenols-Bisphenol A and 1:1-(4:41-dihydroxydiphenyl) - cyclohexane; at least trihydricphenols-phloroglucinol, 1:3:5- tri-(4-hydroxyphenyl) benzene, 1:1:1 - tri - (4-hydroxyphenyl) - ethane, 2,2 - bis - [4:4-(4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl) - cyclohexyl] - propane, and trimeric isopropenylphenol and its hydrogenation products; monohydric phenols-phenol and its methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl and butyl substitution products.
