Abstract
1,130,265. Polymers from aromatic dialdehydes. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 22 June, 1967, No. 28896/67. Heading C3R. The invention comprises polymers with units of formula where X is O or S and =CH-R-CH = is a residue of terephth-al-aldehyde, 1,4- or 1,5- naphthalene dialdehyde, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,10- or 9,10-anthracene dialdehyde; any of the rings in the units may be nuclearly substituted with alkyl groups or chlorine or bromine atoms. The polymers are obtained by reacting (1) terephth-al-aldehyde, 1,40 or 1,5- naphthalene dialdehyde, or 1,4-1, 1,5-, 1,10- or 9,10-anthracenedialdehyde with (2) 3,3<SP>1</SP>-, 3,4<SP>1</SP>-, or 4,41- di(cyanomethyl) diphenyl ether or sulphide in the presence of an alkali metal, alkali metal alkoxide, pyridine or piperidine, any of which reactants may be nuclearly substituted as indicated above. In an example terephth-alaldehyde is reacted with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dicyanomethyl diphenyl ether in an ethanol solution containing sodium ethoxide.
