909,540. Treating liquids with vapours. STAGE, H., [trading as DESTILLATIONSTECHNIK Dr. H. STAGE], STANG-SCHMIDDING, A., [trading as SCHMIDDING APPARATEBAU, WILHELM], and HECKMANN-APPARATE G.m.b.H. Oct. 26, 1960 [Nov. 30, 1959], No. 36778/60. Class 55 (2). In deodorizing edible oils and fats by treating them with entraining vapour, such as steam, in a column 1, Fig. 1, the latter comprises a plurality of plates 2 some, or all, of which have a vapour supply device 5 associated therewith and each having a free overflow 3, but not employing bubble caps or discharge tubes, a mesh packing 4 being provided between the overflow of at least one plate 2 and the next lower plate, the packing comprising fine filaments, wires or the like which occupy only a small space within the packing device, e.g. only a volume of 2%. The mesh packing 4 which may be provided between each pair of adjacent plates, may be in the form of a sheet which is slightly inclined to the vertical axis of the column. The liquid enters at 6 and after treatment may be cooled at 20 before being withdrawn at 8. The cooler 20 may be in the form of a nested tube cooler transversely disposed within the column the treated liquid flowing as a film on the external surfaces thereof and the cooling medium flowing through the interior of the tubes, or alternatively the treated liquid may flow down the inside wall of each pipe of a trickle cooler whilst the cooling medium flows down the outside. The cooling medium may be liquid to be purified, which, after being thus preheated, is fed to the inlet 6. Each plate 2, Fig. 2, has its supply pipe 9 for the vapour to be discharged through openings 13, and its heating supply and discharge pipes 10, 11 lying in a horizontal plane just above the surface of the plate 2 and held by a base plate 14 bearing on a flange 15 of a short pipe 16 extending from the wall of the column. The plate 14 is covered by a hollow casing 17 connected to the vapour pressure pipes 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, so that in the event of leakage, air cannot enter the column but only the vapour, such as steam, which is in any case being supplied to the column.
