Abstract

803,491. Tubular heat exchangers. CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO., Ltd. May 28, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6193/56. Class 64(3) A heat exchange element in which a hot gas is cooled by a liquid comprises a double-walled outer tube 1 forming an open - ended jacket 3 for cooling liquid which flows-also through a concentric inner tube 4, an inlet nozzle, Fig. 1A, for the cooling liquid having inclined, angularly spaced radial tubular passages 8 leading to the jacket 3 and an axial connection 7 to the inner tube 4, an outlet nozzle for the liquid comprising a conical chamber 12 having a base 14 equal in diameter to the external diameter of the tube I, peripherally disposed longitudinal passages 17 leading from the jacket to the chamber, and an axial connection 'between the inner tube 4 arid the chamber, radial openings, e.g. 18, Fig. 1B, being formed between said passages to permit entry and discharge of hot gases, as indicated by the arrows A and B, to and from the space 11 between the tubes 1 and 4. In the form shown, a plurality of helical fins 19 are provided on the tube 4. A number of the heat exchange elements may be mounted in a casing through which hot gases under pressure are passed, the gases flowing also through the annular space 11 of each element, whilst cooling water is simultaneously passed through the jackets 3 and inner tubes 4 of the elements.
