909,235. Centrifugal separators. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 14, 1957; Nov. 28, 1957; Dec. 28, 1957], No. 35846/58. Class 23. A gas mixture, such as a mixture of isotopes, is separated in a vertical rotor having a single support and stabilized by magnetic means. The rotor 102 is driven by a steel plate 105 carried by the rotor, and coacting with a stationary field winding 106. The stabilizing means comprises an iron cylinder 114 on the rotor, and a magnet 115 connected to the housing by damping members 116. The rotor may be flexible and be supported laterally by buffers which engages by the rotor wall. The support for the rotor comprises a resilient shaft 107 on the rotor engaging a plate 108. The shaft rotates within a bush 109 connected to a member 131 in an oil bath 111, springs 112 being provided. The interior of the housing 101 is maintained at reduced pressure and has a helical groove 128 which serves to evacuate gas from the lower part. Gas supplied to the rotor through a duct 118 is discharged into the interior at 120. The heavy fraction is withdrawn from the rotor through tubes 121 and the light fraction is withdrawn through tubes 123 which are shielded by a plate 125.
