Abstract

A mixture of a pitch type material, such as bitumen or coal, wood or cellulose tars, with particles of a heavy material held in suspension is formed by first adding a clay or a modified form of clay, such as "Bentone" or "Fulbent" (both Registered Trade Marks), to the pitch type material to form a gel with its oil components, and then adding particles finer than 8 B.S.S. (2.06 mm.) of a material of S.G. greater than that of the pitch type material. The particles added may include a powdered boron compound, such as boron trioxide, sodium tetraborate or boric acid, and/or lead powder. The mixture may be gelled by mechanical means such as milling or stirring, and/or by chemical means such as using a polar solvent. Examples are disclosed which show the heavy material content of the mixture to be 3-15%.
