Abstract

A clay composition for admixture with graphite to form pencil lead comprises 10 to 70% (preferably 40 to 60%) by weight of an alkaline earth metal bentonite, e.g. calcium and/or magnesium bentonite and 90 to 30% of kaolin of particle size 100% less than 2 microns and 95% less than 1 micron. The bentonite is preferably a non-swelling, pulverized, commercial bentonite, degritted by flotation, centifruging or similar process. The amount of clay composition used may be up to 35% of the total pencil lead formulation and up to 35% thereof may comprise kaolin clay having a particle size distribution comparable to that of the powdered graphite incorporated. Other conventional ingredients, e.g. dyes, may be added to the clay composition.
