[Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (a)] In an aircraft visual landing system, at least one pair of light sources disposed respectively on either side of a runway are so arranged that an axis of maximum light intensity from each source lies substantially parallel with the edges of the runway and that for successively larger angles off the axis there is a rapidly decreasing light intensity. It is stated that with this system the light sources do not have to be reduced in intensity as an aeroplane approaches the runway since the intensity of the light along a line down the centre of the runway is substantially the same for all distances from the runway. By using two pairs of sources 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and 102, 102<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 1) and with the beam from each source slightly inclined to the horizontal, an inclined descent path C (Fig. 2) can be obtained in addition to the horizontal locating path referred to above. The light sources consist of a high pressure (¢ - 2 atmospheres), xenon filled discharge tube, the discharge path being “ inch long. A trigger electrode 7 (Fig. 4) is placed midway between the anode 3 and cathode 5 and is also at the focal point of a parabolic reflector 22. The focal length of the reflector is three inches and its overall dimension one foot. A suitable trigger circuit is described (Fig. 3, not shown) which causes the tube to flash once per second to give a beam of total intensity 36,000 candle power-seconds with a half-power beam width of about 3-5 degrees.
