896,356. Supply systems for discharge lamps. QUARZLAMPEN G.m.b.H. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 1, 1958], No. 6697/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). A discharge lamp used as an ultra-violet radiator is overloaded for short periods in order to increase its radiation without an increase in the size of the lamp. The overload is caused by temporarily reducing the series impedance or discharging a capacitor into the lamp circuit, either method being controlled by a timing switch. In the Specification, it is stated that a lamp rated at 3000 ÁW/cm.<SP>2</SP> in the UV-B range may be flashed to give a radiation of 6000-15000 ÁW/cm<SP>2</SP> for 0.5 to 10 seconds. To avoid overheating the lamp, the spacing time of the flashes may be about twice the flashing time. The lamp may be constructed so that the tube diameter and electrode distance are designed for the average load, but the lead-in conductors and electrodes are dimensioned according to the overload. The electrodes may consist of tungsten with 5% thorium oxide added.
