Class 75(4) A lighting system to illuminate a substantially horizontal surface comprises a row of elongated lighting units spaced apart by distances less than their length along at least one edge of the surface, each of the units comprising an elongated tubular discharge lamp, a shield to intercept upwardly directed light from the lamp and a reflector to direct light emerging in a downward direction from the lamp transversely over the surface in a substantially horizontal beam. A lamp holder 24 supported on each end 9 of a metallic enclosure 5 mounts a very high output discharge tube 22. Light from the tube passes downwardly through an opening between sides 27 of upward extensions from the top 25 and falls upon a reflector 39 extending downwardly from the top 25 and terminates in a horizontal portion 20. A cap 27 covers the lamp and an upright pipe 4 supports each end of the enclosure. The upper portion of the surface of the discharge tube has a reflecting coating. The curvature of the reflector is generally parabolic. The horizontal portions 20 ends 9 and all upper parts of the enclosure are blackened internally. A glass panel 6 closes the front of the enclosure and braces 41 and bands 42 strengthen it. Flangible couplings mount the pipes 4 in a concrete base.
