Abstract

1,161,239. Street lamps. T. DUNWOODY. 5 Jan., 1968 [7 Oct., 1966], No. 44889/66. Heading F4R. A lantern for street lighting, especially for a system in which a series of lanterns are slung under a continuous metal canopy along the side or centre of a road, consists of a light transmissive plastics envelope 15 carrying focusing means 40 for concentrating the beam from a fluorescent discharge tube 2 in a desired direction. The tube may have an internal reflector, e.g. in the form of an internal reflecting coating 3 to direct the light on to the focusing means. The lantern may contain two side-by-side tubes, focusing means being provided on opposite faces of the envelope. To avoid lateral glare a series of louvres 44 may be arranged to project at right angles to the tube axis on a member 46 mounted on the bracket 5 supporting the lamp. The envelope is supported beneath a metal cover at one side by a loop 25 pivoted on a bracket 26 on the cover and engaging a slot 27 in a block 28 on the envelope and at the other side by a bolt 33 screwed into a rod 31 carried in a bracket 32 on the cover, the bolt fitting into an open slot 35 in a block 36 on the envelope.
