Abstract

1,194,331. Lamps. H. MARTIN and B. MARTIN. 12 July, 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16090/66. Heading F4R. A light projector, e.g. a vehicle headlamp, comprises a truncated ellipsoidal reflector 4, a reflector 5 of spherical curvature disposed to the rear of the ellipsoidal reflector with its centre of curvature in register with the local or primary focus of the ellipsoidal reflector, and a frontal refractor 14 forward of and spaced from the ellipsoidal reflector, the source of light 3 having a substantially cylindrical envelope with its axis substantially coincident with the common optical axis of the reflectors. A rear refractor 8 is adjustably mounted inside the ellipsoidal reflector to concentrate, at the distant or secondary focus, light which fails to impinge on either reflector. The source 3 is supported by a retaining ring 25 which can be adjusted axially along a threaded cylinder 23. The beam of the projector may be shaped by a sheet metal structure 17 located in a transparent enclosure 20 and having upper and lower reflective surfaces jointed by an intermediate portion with an opening 18. The upper part of the structure 17 may be pivoted relative to the lower part by means of a bowden cable operated by the driver of the vehicle, and similar means may be provided for tilting the projector on its supporting bracket 21. The source 3 is preferably of the quartz-iodine type.
