995,255. Light refractors for lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 30, 1963 [Feb. 20, 1962], No. 6543/62. Heading F4R. [Also in Division G2] Lamps are constructed of which the housings comprise refractor plates with pressure on one side formed in groups of parallel rows of prisms, the prism surfaces being arranged so that a parallel beam of light falling on a particular group at a predetermined angle will be split up and directed to two focii which may be points or lines. In the lamps, light bulbs or images thereof are placed at the focii of the various groups so that light coming from the lamps is suitably directed. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, conical mirrors 13, 14 produce ring images of a light centre F 1 at F 2 , F 2 <SP>1</SP>. Two refractor plates are arranged so that the focii of two groups of prisms are F 1 , F 2 and F 1 , F 2 <SP>1</SP>, so that the light emerges as a parallel beam as shown. In another embodiment the mirrors are replaced by a plane mirror opposite the light bulb which produces an image of the filament F 1 at a point F 2 . In this embodiment the focal point F 2 <SP>1</SP> is not " used." In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, a conical refractor 29 is used and plane mirror 27 and conical mirror 28 form circular and point images respectively of lamp 26 at F 3 , F 2 . The two groups of prisms have their focii at F 1 , F 2 . and F 1 , F 3 respectively. In another embodiment similar to Fig. 6, the positions of the mirror are exchanged and the images of the lamps are not at the focii of the prism groups but are so arranged that the light is directed downwards below the horizontal. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, a tubular lamp is used in conjunction with plane reflector 34, inverted V reflector 35 and elongated refractor plates 32, 33. More than one light bulb is used in another embodiment. The side of the refractor plate opposite the prisms may have flutes or prisms running perpendicular to the first-mentioned prisms.
