[Also in Division G2] For simulating solar radiation, e.g. in testing artificial satellites, a group of radiation sources 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, for example, arc lamps 10 in reflectors 11, associated with optical systems 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are focused directly on a plane as interfitting shapes which combine to build up a composite radiation area. The shapes may be triangles, squares or hexagons and may be produced by shaped, e.g. hexagonal lenses 22, 22<SP>1</SP> or lenses with hexagonal masks. Light which would fall outside the area to be irradiated may be stopped off by screening part of the peripheral lenses of the groups by masks 23, reflectors 24 or prisms being provided to redirect the light through the unmasked part of the lens.
