Abstract
908,141. Stripping insulation. ERICSSON TELEPHONES Ltd. March 6, 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 7721/58. Class 36. [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for wrapping wire or wires round a terminal comprises a rotatable mandrel having a bore within which the terminal is received, means for locating the wire to be wrapped parallel with said bore and means for rotating the mandrel and the wire relative to the terminal to wrap the wire therearound. A mandrel 24 is rotated by gears 3, 4 driven by an electric motor housed in a pistol grip 1 of the tool. The mandrel 24 is formed at its outer end with a bore 25 to receive the member to be wrapped and with a flattened part 34 having a groove 26 along each side to guide the end of the wire or wires being wrapped. Fingers 15 extend along the mandrel and are held thereon against leaf-springs 18 by a sleeve 14 adjustably threaded on a part 13 of the tool housing 1. The outer end of each finger 15 is formed with a recess 32, registering with the bore 25 in the mandrel, and with a pair of recesses 31 having conical end portions 35, registering with the grooves 26. Tapered external surfaces 28 on the finger ends co-operate with an internal tapered surface 27 on the sleeve 14. In operation the sleeve 14 is partly unscrewed on the thread 13 to allow the fingers 15 to open. Insulated wire is then laid along one of the grooves 26, so that its end abuts and is positioned by a saddle 21 adjustable along a slot 23 in the mandrel 24, thus determining the length to be wound. The sleeve 14 is then screwed up on the thread 13 to close the fingers 15 an amount sufficient to cause the recesses 31 to nick the insulation of the wire and the sleeve is locked in this position by a latch 10 thereon engaging the appropriate one of a series of radial slots 37 on the housing 1. The extending wire is then bent at right-angles and laid in a slot 29 in the end of the sleeve 14. The tool is then applied to the member to be wrapped, which passes into the bore 25, and a trigger 2 is pressed to rotate the mandrel 24 to wrap the wire around the member, insulation being stripped from the wire by the recesses 31 as it is drawn therethrough The stripped insulation falling through slots 19 in the sleeve 14 or being expelled by centrifugal action or air jet. As the wire is wrapped the member moves out of the bore 25. Alternatively the saddle 21 may be removed and the wire passed through a bore 7 in the end of the mandrel, through the slot 23, along a groove 26 and through the recesses 31 to the member to be wrapped.
