Abstract

[Also in Groups XXII and XXX] A wheel or roller comprising a stationary hub element, an annular rim element and a ring of balls interposed between said two elements has the rim element, which is freely rotatable about the hub element, formed by pressing. A hub 10 formed with a cruciform aperture has a peripheral groove 14 providing an inner race for a ring of balls 12 supporting a rim element 11. The rim element 12 is made by a series of pressing operations, the first of which forms an inturned flange 15, the second a stepped portion on the opposite side of the rim and the third a retaining lip 16 defining an annular recess 17, followed by hardening. A spring clip ring 19 is inserted in the recess 17 to hold a hardened steel washer 18 which retains the balls 12. A dished lubricant retainer ring 20 is applied to the flange 15. The wheel or roller may be used in an endless conveyer chain as described in Specification 737,377 to which reference is made.
