Abstract

Filamentary yarns and tows of polyacrylonitrile, free from contained solvent, are drawn in a medium comprising the vapour of n-amyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, or mixtures thereof, n-amyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, or mixtures thereof, or of cyclohexanone. The term "polyacrylonitrile" includes polymers, copolymers, grafted polymers and mixtures thereof containing 85-100% polyacrylonitrile and up to 15% of one or more copolymerizable ethylenic compounds. The vapour may be maintained at a temperature close to the boiling point of the liquid of which it is the vapour, usually slightly below the boiling point, so that drawing may be effected in the vapour of the boiling liquid. In Examples (1), (3), a polyacrylonitrile untwisted yarn is drawn up to 16,5x in cyclohexanone vapour at 153 DEG C., (2) a yarn of filaments of 85% polyacrylonitrile and 15% polyvinyl acetate twisted 50 turns per metre is drawn 11,4x in amyl alcohol vapour at 131 DEG C., (4) a tow of filaments of a copolymer of 92% acrylonitrile and 8% methyl methacrylate is drawn in saturated isoamyl acetate vapour at 145 DEG C. The process of the invention enables filaments to be drawn to a higher draw ratio than is possible by conventional methods, and for a given draw ratio the process yields filaments of higher tenacity.
