Abstract

1,042,305. Polyvinylidene fluoride filaments. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1964 [March 14, 1963], No. 7145/64. Heading B5B. In a process for the manufacture of polyvinylidene fluoride yarns, a solution containing 10-50 parts by weight of polyvinylidene fluoride in 100 parts by weight of a polar organic solvent is extruded into a bath containing, per volume, 50-99À95% of water and 50-0À05% of one or more of: an alcohol, a glycol, glycerol, a polyglycol ether, dimethyl sulphoxide, a ketone or an amide or substituted amide, and the coagulated yarn is withdrawn, dried and stretched. The bath is maintained at a temperature of from room temperature to below the boiling-point of the bath component of lowest boiling-point, and the spun solution remains therein for a time sufficient for the surface of the yarn to harden but insufficient to cause the yarn to become hard and opaque. The polyvinylidene fluoride may be a homopolymer or a copolymer containing at least 95 mole per cent of vinylidene fluoride. Many polar organic solvents are specified, the preferred solvent being a mixture of a liquid amide, e.g. dimethyl-formamide with a ketone. The organic component of the spinning bath is preferably the solvent system used for the spinning solution. Specified compounds are methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dimethylacetamide, dimethyl-formamide, N- methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dimethyl-sulphoxide. The coagulated yarn is dried in air to remove water and solvents, and may optionally be subjected to washing and vacuum drying. The dried yarn is preferably twisted before drawing. In one embodiment, yarn is fed from the spinning bath, through an oven at 180-250‹ F. and then, at a higher speed, through a second oven at 500-800‹ F. The yarn is then washed with water at 100-180‹ F., twisted, vacuum dried, and drawn, e.g. 3-10 times in an oven at 250-400‹ F. The yarn has a tenacity of more than 2À5 g/denier.
