Abstract

907,359. Blasting. ST. GEORGE'S ENGINEERS Ltd., and BLAGDEN (MANCHESTER) Ltd., VICTOR. Oct. 12, 1960 [Oct. 15, 1959], No. 34905/59. Class 60. A machine for cleaning the interior surfaces of drums and other hollow cylindrical and tubular articles by blasting with shot or other abrasive blasting material comprises a rotating table, on which the articles are loaded with their axes vertical, which is moved intermittently to bring the articles one at a time to the position where the blasting is to take place, means for lifting the article vertically at this position through the operative zone of a blastant throwing wheel, the distance which the article is lifted being such that its full length is subjected to the blasting, and means for reversing the movement of the article so that it is lowered again to the table through the operative zone of the throwing wheel, the intermittent rotary movement of the table being automatically controlled, interlocked and registered by electrical or other means to bring each article to the blasting station, correctly position it and retain it there for the necessary time for the blasting operation. A machine comprises a horizontal table A having four locating means a, each adapted to receive a cylinder B. The table is intermittently rotated, e.g. by an electric motor, through 90 degrees so as to bring a cylinder into a blasting chamber C in which is a throwing wheel D. A fork E engageable with the bottom edge of the cylinder is secured to a slide e affixed to an endless chain or cable E<SP>1</SP> passing over pulleys e<SP>1</SP>, e<SP>1</SP>, one of which is motor driven. The throwing wheel D is secured to a vertical hollow shaft F rotated by a pulley f. A shot feed tube F<SP>1</SP> passes through the shaft F and is secured at its upper end to the machine; it may be rotated. The shot is fed by gravity or by pressure, such as compressed air, screw conveyer or vibratory methods. At the centre of the bottom plate d of the wheel is fitted a removable plug G to ensure even distribution of the shot over the blades d<SP>1</SP>. The plug may be flat, conical, convex or concave; it may be of the two-tier or cascade type, shot being fed to the centre of the plug G and delivered through apertures g therein. The machine may also include means for simultaneously cleaning the lids or tops and bottoms of cylinders which are to be supplied therewith.
