Abstract
718,087. Grinding the ends of coiled springs &c. WHITELAW, A. R. Oct. 19, 1953, [Nov. 19, 1952.] No. 29183/52. Class 60. In a machine for grinding the ends of coiled compression springs and other articles of the kind comprising two spaced-apart grinding wheels with opposed grinding faces between which the articles are passed in succession, while mounted in or on a moving carrier, the grinding, wheels 4, 5 are mounted on shafts 6, 7 which are inclined relatively to one another; each of the opposed faces of the two grinding wheels has its outer portion 10 of a flat convex conical form of small angle, e.g. 2¢ degrees. Thus, at one point 13 the faces are substantially parallel, and from that point they progressively diverge circumferentially to form a comparatively wide tapering space 14. The shafts 6, 7 may be driven by separate motors or may be connected by a universal joint and driven by a single motor. The moving carrier comprises a rotating disc 1 carried at the upper end of a vertical spindle driven by a motor, the disc 1 having pockets 2 to receive the springs 3. Alternatively the springs can be mounted in pockets in a rectilinearly moving carrier such as a moving belt or conveyer, or in pockets in the links of an endless chain guided around a fixed eccentric guide member located between the wheel. The moving carrier may have an oscillating motion in its own plane imparted to it. At the entry end, the springs are supported on a plate 15, their upper ends being guided into the space between the wheels by a deflector plate 16; as each spring reaches the point 13 where the grinding wheel faces are parallel, it is delivered on to a plate 17 and thence into a shoot.
