In driving-apparatus for belt conveyers of the type comprising two driving drums 18, 19 around which the conveyer belt is passed in zigzag fashion, the drums are mounted such that their heights can be varied, so that either drum 18 can be selected as the highest to receive the incoming stretch of belt 30A, as shown, or the drum 19 can be selected as the highest to receive the incoming stretch of belt when this comes from the opposite side to that shown. By this means it is said that the drive gearing is always arranged on the side of the assembly opposite the working face 31 when used in a mine roadway. The drums 18 are mounted on shafts 16, 17 driven by gearing 11-15 from a motor 10. A brake 25 is mounted within a housing 24 for engagement with a brake drum 26 on the motor shaft. The means for adjusting the heights of the drums comprises circular carriers 40 in which the shafts 16, 17 are mounted eccentrically, the carriers 40 being rotatable in ring-like frames 43 formed in side-frames 20, 21. Each carrier is secured in one of two rotational positions spaced 180 degrees apart by two keys 41 fitting in aligned slots in the carrier and the frame 43. Removable cover-plates 45, 46 embrace the carrier assembly to retain the keys in place. When the heights of the drums are to beinterchanged the cover-plate 45 and keys 41 are removed from each of the carrier assemblies to enable the carriers to be rotated through 180 degrees, after which they are then replaced.
