Class 60 Apparatus for the abrasive treatment of articles, especially for cleaning, polishing, hardening or otherwise treating castings, forgings and other metallic objects, comprises an endless conveyer 1 travelling around a driving drum 2 and idlers 3-7 of which 7 may be weighted to tension the conveyer. A batch of articles delivered on to the conveyer from the hopper 15 is carried along to point 10 where the conveyer passes around one or more pairs of discs 12. With the drum 2 elevated, the travel of the articles is arrested, and they are subjected to an abrasive stream 13 supplied by a rotating impeller wheel, compressed air jet or the like. The supply of abrasive material to the projector unit is then stopped and the articles tumbled without blasting to remove the abrasive material which is collected in base hopper 16 and returned by spiral conveyer 17 to the projector unit. The drum 2 is then lowered and the articles continue their travel and fall into delivery shoot 14, a fresh batch of articles being delivered from the hopper 15 on to the conveyer. The means for operating the hopper 15 and for interrupting the abrasive treatment are controlled by the means for raising and lowering the drum 2; the direction of the whole cycle may be controlled by timing means.
