906,641. Staging for workmen in mines. ALIMAK-VERKEN A.B. Dec. 12, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 40157/58. Class 20 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] A platform 6, Fig. 1, for workmen in mines, is raised by means of driving mechanism 8 on a rack 11 on a guide-rail 4 fixed to the rock face, and having a hinged section 4a, Fig. 1a, which is adapted to be moved with the platform under the shelter of the rock during blasting. The hinge may have a horizontal or vertical axis. The driving mechanism 8 is driven by an electric motor having a control 21 on a pillar 22 on the platform, which also carries a protection shelter 24. The driving mechanism comprises three pinions 10 engaging the rack 11 and driven by worm gear 41, Figs. 2b and 2c. To allow the pinions to turn relatively in order to compensate for irregularities in the pitch of the rack the pinions 10 are rotatably mounted on shafts 39 by means of flanges 50 having slots 53 in which engage pins 52 held against projections 51 in the pinions by springs 54. This mechanism can be driven by hand. One section of the rail 4 is mounted on a mobile trolley 1 and other sections are bolted to the wall of a mine shaft. The platform has a hinged extension 16. In the modification of Fig. 1a an operator is seated at 56 below the platform 6 which can be pivoted by means of adjustable struts 59 always to take an horizontal position whatever the inclination of the guide rails 4. The sections of the rail 4 are connected together at the front by bolts through interengaging ears each bolt having a handle with a finger engaging between two ears to prevent disengagement. A bolt also connects the sections at the rear. A vertical shaft is driven upwardly first by drilling and blasting from the platform on a rail section on the trolley. This rail section is then connected to the lower end of a rail secured to the shaft wall and the platform transferred to this rail, the trolley removed and the driving of the shaft continued with the necessary extension of the rail.
