Abstract

906,481. Rotary I.C. engines. AUGUST, P. Nov. 25, 1960 [Sept. 20, 1960], No. 40544/60. Class 110 (2). Air, or an air-fuel mixture, enters the precompression stage (Fig. 2) of an I.C. engine by inlet 15, is compressed by cylindrical piston 12 carried on eccentric 10 and passes through passage 16 to the main compression stage comprising a reciprocating piston 25 and spring- loaded counter-piston 26. As the air or mixture is compressed further, passage 16 is closed by piston 25 and ignition takes place. The counter piston 26 moves back to uncover channel 31, and the combustion gases pass into the expansion stage, where work is extracted by blade piston 4 and eccentric rotor 5 before the gases exhaust through exhaust opening 37. The expansion ratio may therefore be greater than the compression ratio, and in the embodiment described is 1.4 to 1.5 times greater. The crank-shaft 23 of the main compression stage is connected to the driving shaft 2, and rotates at the same speed as the latter. The counter piston 26 may alternatively be cam operated. The piston and rotor of the expansion stage are sealed by fillets 35 and 36 and by cylindrical roller 32. The engine is cooled both by water and by air blown through the hollow centre around the shaft 2. Specification 905,865 is referred to.
