Abstract

904,049. Mine-clearing. BOFORS A.B. Sept. 26, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 32981/60. Class 9 (2). [Also in Group XXXIII] A mine-clearing device comprising a hose 1 filled with explosive, e.g. T.N.T., and attached to a rocket 3 is provided with braking means in the form of a parachute 4 having spring means 7, Fig. 3, to control its opening. The rocket when discharged from a launcher 2 pulls the hose 1 behind it and when the rear end of the hose reaches a certain speed the parachute opens. The parachute is designed for the braking force, F B , to cease suddenly when it has dropped to a certain value. In Fig. 3, the parachute cords 6 are connected to the hose 1 by means 5 which allows the parachute to rotate independently of the hose 1. The spring 7, which may be a helical spring or twisted rubber strands in a stretchable textile sheath, connects the centre of the parachute to the means 5, so that when F B falls sufficiently, the pull of the cords 6 is less than the pull of the spring 7 and the spring shortens. F B then falls more rapidly and produces further shortening of the spring. Instead of the arrangement of Fig. 3, the spring may be an elastic cord placed around the circumference of the parachute or replacing one of the cords 6. Two elastic cords may be used connecting diametrically-opposed points on the circumference of the parachute.
