Abstract
581,726. Parachute apparatus. JACKSON, J. M. Aug. 1, 1941, No. 9849. [Class 4] Apparatus for landing an object from the air comprises a container supported by a comparatively small parachute so as to ensure a rapid descent, rocket devices being ignited as the container approaches the ground to reduce the speed of descent to a safe value. The rockets are disposed around the top of the container or in a handle interposed in the loadline of the parachute and are ignited when an electric circuit is closed upon contact of a pilot weight with the ground. Groups of rockets may be fired in sequence. A weight H is connected to a canister L secured beneath the main container by clips R1, R2 so that it is released by the jerk occasioned when the parachute opens. The canister contains a cable G connected to the weight and to a plunger T which is pulled down against a spring P when all the cable is paid out. Initially, balls M co-operate with a groove N in the plunger to prevent it from touching an insulated contact V in the electric firing circuit. The plunger has a grease-tight washer S and when the cable G tightens the shock is absorbed by grease being forced through a hole O in a casing U in which the plunger slides. When the plunger is fully depressed, the balls M escape so that when the weight H touches the ground the spring P presses the -plunger against the contact V. Instead of a pilot weight, an adjustable time fuze may fire the rockets or barometric devices, sound or wireless wave reflection devices, or devices utilizing earth capacity effect may be used:
