Abstract
615,552. Incendiary bombs. BAMFORD, C. H. Feb. 27, 1946, No. 6079. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A bomb for heating rapidly to combustion point all the combustible surfaces in an enclosure is provided with an incendiary charge of magnesium and/or aluminium powder or alloys thereof, which is dispersed and ignited by a charge of gunpowder, the gunpowder charge being 0.5-5 per cent w/w of the incendiary charge. In a form adapted for use from aircraft, Fig. 2, a container 10 with a gunpowder filling 11 initiated by an impact fuze 12 is placed in the nose end of the casing 7 of the bomb, which is filled with approximately 8 lbs. of magnesium powder. The magnesium filling 8 is ejected through the base of the bomb upon rupture of a metal diaphragm 9. According to the terminal velocity required, either a tail or a parachute is fitted on the bomb. For static demolition the magnesium powder 2 is loosely confined in a bag, Fig. 1, the gunpowder charge 3 being placed in a small bag 4 at the bottom of the bag 1. Two Bickford leads 5 with their forward ends embedded in.the gunpowder are taken to the top of the magnesium filling where each is attached to a delayedaction fuze enclosed in a rubber envelope 6.
