Abstract
904,002. Engine constuction. BUNYAN, T.W. Dec. 15, 1958 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 2427/58. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXVI] A reciprocating engine comprises an inclined crank-pin 11, Fig. 3, a cylinder-piston unit 17, a transmission structure 23 mounted by bearings 25,26 on the inclined crank-pin, coupling means 20, including a coupling element 34, sliding between surfaces of guide members 22, Fig. 2, which prevent movements of the coupling element transverse to a plane containing the axes of the cylinder-piston unit and the crank-shaft 2 and flanges 21 secured to the coupling means, making sliding engagement with guide members 22 preventing movement in. that plane and normal to the axis of the cylinder piston unit, the connection between the coupling element 34 and the transmission structure 23 permitting relative movement which includes a linear component and a rocking component. In the arrangement described four cylinder-piston units drive two transmission structures arranged at 90 degrees apart in which one plain bearing 25, Fig. 4, on each transmission structure engages the crankpin 11 and the other plain bearing 26 engages a bearing surface on the outside of the plain bearing 25 of the other transmission structure. Each ball coupling element 34 contains a hole to receive an extension 28, 29. In modifications, the balls 34 may be replaced by cylindrical pins 35 which engage the guides 22 directly. The cylinder-piston units may be adjustable in position towards and away from the crank-shaft axis in order to vary the piston stroke.
