Abstract
903,857. Preventing overloading of cranes. ARROL & CO. Ltd., SIR WILLIAM. Jan. 20, 1961 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35663/59. Class 78 (4). When an overhead travelling crane is overloaded part of the crab 12 is tilted about a fulcrum 17 by the lifting rope 16 which passes over a pulley 14 to a winch 13. The crab runs on a bridge comprising parallel guides 10, 11, which runs on further rails at right-angles thereto. As described, two crabs are provided and tilting is limited by members 18 which abut the girders 10, 11. The invention is particularly applicable to forge cranes where an overload may be applied to the crab by a press. When this occurs a headstock 15 is depressed on supporting hydraulic jacks 19 which are connected through non-return valves to hydraulic accumulators. Further overload tilts the crab, a buffer 28 controlling its return to the horizontal. Air under pressure in the accumulators forces fluid back into the jacks 19 through throttle valves. In a practical example the jacks 19 are depressed by a 25% overload and the crab is tilted by a 50% overload. Alternatively the crabs may be arranged to tilt before the jacks 19 are depressed.
