Abstract

Fibres or fabrics passed between and in contact with a pair of juxtaposed belt surfaces, at least one of which has a roughened surface provided by blunt flexible and resilient protuberances, which are partly immersed in a liquid medium, move in the same direction and at least one of the belts is given a separate additional oscillatory movement. Apparatus for carrying out such treatment of fibres or fabrics comprises a pair of endless belts 1 at least one of which has a roughened surface, i.e. blunt flexible and resilient protuberances 2 (Fig. 3), driving <PICT:0903470/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0903470/IV (b)/2> <PICT:0903470/IV (b)/3> means, e.g. driven rollers 3 and means for imparting to at least one of the belts 1 an oscillatory movement, e.g. eccentric cams or an ultrasonic transducer in the form of a roller or bar 15 (Fig. 7). If desired successive treatments in two or more assemblies of such apparatus in series may be carried out, utility of conveyer belts 16, 18 and squeeze rolls 17 being made (see Fig. 4) between juxtaposed baths of liquid medium. Endless belts 1 may pass over and under respectively series of alternating idler rolls 5, 7 which cause the fibres or fabrics to follow a sinusoidal path.
