Abstract

In a filter for melt-spinning artificial fibres comprising a body 1 having a detachable lid 2 the joint mating surfaces 14 of the body and lid are bevelled at their inner peripheries <PICT:0902690/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0902690/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0902690/IV(a)/3> to form a V-shaped annular recess having walls 11, 13 forming angles a and b between 135 degrees and 160 degrees with the interior walls of the container and the joint is sealed by a gasket 7 in the form of a band contacting the edges 15, 16 of the recess. The gasket is preferably of metal, for example lead, stainless steel, aluminium or copper and preferably has a free height slightly greater than the height h1 (Fig. 5) of the groove 8 in which it is located so that it is initially slightly compressed in the groove and makes contact with the sides 9, 10 of the groove, as in Fig. 4, to seal the container at low pressures. At high pressures the gasket is forced against the recess edges 15, 16 as in Fig. 5. The body 1 contains sand and a screen 17 to filter the polymer melt which is admitted through a conduit 4 and leaves through conduits 5 en route to a spinneret. Specification 536,379 is referred to.
