785,479. Stuffing-box substitutes. CONNECTICUT HARD RUBBER CO. April 28, 1955 [May 3, 1954], No. 12328/55. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] A hollow metal fitting 10, having an external flange 11 for attachment to a sealed housing and also inwardly-directed flanges 15 and 16, is sealed by a cylindrical body 17 of polytetrafluoroethylene, a gasket 25 made of a silicone rubber elastomer being also provided in the interior of the fitting. The cylinder 17 is first made of a diameter slightly greater than the inside diameter of the flanges 15, 16 and is drawn or extruded until its diameter is reduced to less than the inside diameter of the flanges and the fitting, with the cylinder 17 and gasket 25 inserted, is heated to between 400‹ and 600‹ F., which causes the cylinder to tend to revert towards its former shape and expand into sealing engagement with the flanges. One or more bores 18 may be provided for electrically-conducting rods 12 having clamping nuts 13, 14 and the bores, after heat treatment of the assembly, have smaller diameters than the rods so that the sealing effect is augmented by the rods causing expansion of the cylinders 17 into sealing engagement with the gaskets 25. The compressive effect of the clamping nuts also augments the sealing effect.
