Abstract
902,433. Luminescence. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 20, 1958 [Nov. 22, 1957], No. 36552/57. Class 39 (1). An illuminating device comprises a sealed envelope of light-transmissive material such as glass andof substantially circular cross-section enclosing a filling of radioactive gas emitting #-radiation, e.g. tritium, the interior wall of the envelope being coated, except for a window, with a visible-light reflecting material, e.g. finely-powdered TiO 2 or MgO, and the coating and the window being covered with a layer of material luminescing under the action of #- radiation. The layer of luminescing material is of such thickness as to absorb substantially the whole of the #-radiation falling upon it while not absorbing an appreciable amount of the visible light emitted by the luminescing material. The light-reflecting material can be applied to the envelope in a suspension or as a smoke. The envelope can be in the form of a sphere or a tube of circular cross-section, and in the latter case the window is a portion of the envelope subtending an angle of from 45 to 180 degrees at the longitudinal axis thereof. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 646,414.
