Abstract

In a hardenable straight chromium stainless steel comprising: .Cr.10-14% .C.0.07-0.14% .S and/or Se.0.001-0.5% .Mn.0.1-1.75% .Si.0.1-1.0% .Ni.up to 1% .Mo.up to 0.2% .W.up to 0.2% .N.up to 0.05% .balance Fe.1. The variation of hardness as a function of tempering temperature is retarded by including 0.03-0.35% of columbium and tantalum with 0-0.5% vanadium. The alloy can be made free machining by including .P.0.001-0.05% .and S.0.07-0.5% The addition of up to 0.6% zirconium and/or up to 0.6% molybdenum for special purposes is also mentioned.
