Abstract

A bituminous coating composition of reduced fire hazard suitable for application to building structures, woven or unwoven fabric and the like comprises two or more finely ground chemical compounds which react at high temperatures, e.g. 90 DEG C., to produce an incombustible and cellular substance which retards or prevents the bitumen from flowing when heated. Suitable compounds are an aluminium salt, e.g. potash alum, mixed with a carbonate or bicarbonate, e.g. sodium bicarbonate; magnesium sulphate (hydrated) mixed with calcium hydroxide or barium chloride (hydrated). The composition may additionally include one or more of a fatty amine type surface active agent, white spirit, glycerine tar, rubber, resins, oils, fats and fibrous or powdered fillers, e.g. asbestos.ALSO:Bituminous material is hindered and prevented from flowing at high temperatures e.g. created by fire outbreak by incorporating in it, either separately or in admixture two or more finely ground chemical compounds which react at the high temperature, heat about 90 DEG C., to produce a flow-retarding incombustible and cellular substance. Suitable compounds are an aluminium salt, e.g. potash alum, mixed with a bicarbonate or carbonate e.g. sodium carbonate; magnesium sulphate (hydrated) mixed with calcium hydroxide or barium chloride (hydrated). Other substances which may be included in the bituminous material are a fatty amine type surface action agent, white spirit, glycerine, tar, rubber, resins, oils, fats and fibrous or powdered fillers, e.g. asbestos.
