Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a flame retarder which makes flammable and combustible org. high-molecular materials flame-retarding when blended with them, consisting of a specified hydrated magneisum silicate compd.
CONSTITUTION: A flame retarder consists of a hydrated magnesium silicate compd. of the formula wherein n is 6W8. Since this compd. has a porous structure, the compd. possesses water absorption properties and hygroscopicity. Thus, the compd. has been used as a drying agent. When 10W200pts.wt. said compd. is blended with 100pts.wt. flammable or combustible org. high-molecular material such as PE, PVC or nylon, these materials can be flame-retarded. When this compd. is used together with conventional inorg. or org. flame retarders, the flame-retarding effect can be further improved.
