Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a fireproof composition having improved heat-insulating properties, by adding hollow alumina to a mixture containing a synthetic resin emulsion, an inorganic filler and a nonburning organic fiber.
CONSTITUTION: To a fireproof composition comprising a synthetic resin emulsion, an inorganic filler and a nonburning organic fiber, is added 2W50wt%, based on said inorganic filler, of hollow alumina. As the synthetic resin emulsion which can be used, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion is particularly preferred. As the inorganic filler, a compound having water of hydration, such as aluminum hydroxide is particularly preferred, because the compound, upon heating, liberates the water of hydration endothermically. As the nonburning organic fiber, phenol fiber is preferred from the point of cost and fiber length. The hollow alumina is one prepared by melting Bayer's process alumina in an electric furnace and treating to form hollow spherical alumina. The particle diameter of the hollow alumina is preferably 100W1,000μ, from the point of heat-insulating effect and strength.
