Relates to a cartridge-operated tool for firing pins into structures of the type in which the pin is driven by a captive piston or hammer forced along the barrel by the explosive gases. According to the invention the cartridge chamber 7 is axially displaceable and in the ready-to-fire position is disposed with the base 6<SP>1</SP> of the cartridge 5 adjacent a firing pin 39a projecting out of the rear end of the piston 2, 3, the cartridge base containing the firing charge, thus facing forwardly, i.e. in the direction of driving. The cartridge chamber 7 slides in a block 8 rigidly connected to the butt 21 which is provided with a gas expansion chamber 34 in communication with a bore 35 in the block 8. A pin 19 with sealing grooves extends into the chamber 7 and can be adjusted to vary the size of the combustion chamber. On pressing the trigger 31 a ring-shaped hammer 22 is first pressed back against the action of a spring 23 until a pawl 25 disengages from a slot 24 and the hammer 22 springs forward. Due to the impact of the hammer 22 on the block 8, the cartridge chamber 7 is thrown forwardly so that the cartridge base 6<SP>1</SP> strikes against the firing pin 39a. The gas pressure developed presses the cartridge base 6<SP>1</SP> and the chamber 7 against the head 3 of the piston and they follow the piston during its consequent movement along the barrel until the chamber 7 is halted by engagement of an abutment 11 with a shoulder 10 on the block 8. This causes forward rejection of the cartridge and at the same time openings 12 in the chamber 7 are uncovered to permit the residual gases to d scharge through the bore 35 to the expansion chamber 34.
