Abstract
901,407. Making electric lamps with an internal pressure greater than atmospheric. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI R.T. Feb. 25, 1959 [Feb. 26, 1958], No.6547/59. Class 39 (2). In a process of sealing gas-filled glass vessels, e.g. incandescent electric lamps, having a gas filling above atmospheric pressure, a sealed container filled with gas at high pressure is enclosed in the vessel and is opened after sealing. The container may be filled with the filling gas mixture, e.g. nitrogen and a rare gas, or with one or more components of the mixture. A metal container, e.g. a thin-walled iron tube with one end welded and the other closed by a plug of metallic solder having a melting-point above the temperature occurring during sealing, e.g. above 400 ‹-500 ‹ C. may be used. Alternatively, both ends may be closed by welding and one or more opening provided in the walls of the container and closed by solder. The solder may be melted after sealing by highfrequency heating. Alternatively, the container may be opened by heating by current flowing through a resistance wire embedded in the solder, one end of the wire being connected to one of the filament supports and the other to a separate lead. To avoid damage to the contents of the lamp by the escaping gas, the container may be arranged in the neck of the lamp so that the gas escapes in the direction of the lamp base.
