901,217. Reducing surface friction on vehicles. GARDEN A. D. March 10, 1960, No. 8461/60. Class 4. The body of a motor vehicle is formed with rearwardly-open cavities which form lowpressure zones to cause air flowing over the vehicle in the vicinity of the cavities to become accelerated thus reducing air resistance to forward movement of the vehicle. A vehicle has a roof, the rear part of which extends over the rear window to form one cavity 30 and the fairing over each rear light assembly is similarly extended to form cavities 32. A further cavity 31 is formed beneath a rearwardly extended luggage-compartment cover. The peripheral edges of the roof surrounding cavity 30 may be concave and cavities may be formed in the body side panels. Suction, as from an engine cooling fan, may be applied to the cavities.
