Abstract
901,091. Jointing by stamping. MARX, C. T. March 24, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 9388/58. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A full stroke mechanism for crimping tools includes two members 18, 20 which are relatively movable along parallel paths and have opposed surfaces, one surface including a straight part 43 parallel to the paths of the members and recesses 40, 42 at the ends of the straight path, and the other surface having a groove 34 of which the bottom includes a part inclined longitudinally to the straight surface, the depth of the groove being greatest at its ends, and which contains a ball or roller 38 which while aligned with the straight surface is pressed by a spring 36 or by its own weight against the straight surface, and has a diameter such that it cannot move between the ends of the groove when in contact with the straight surface but can when aligned with either of the recesses at the ends of the straight surface, the recesses being shaped so that the ball or roller can ride out of them and on to the straight surface during appropriate relative movement of the two members. In a modification, the members are rotatable coaxially and the opposed surfaces are part cylindrical. In an embodiment, a pair of crimping pliers consists of handles 2 and 4 pivoted together at 6, each handle being pivoted to crimping jaws 8 and 10 respectively which are pivoted together by a link 12. The handles are connected by a full stroke mechanism according to the invention. In operation, when the handles of the pliers are widest apart the roller is held in recess 40 on the member 20 by the spring 36. As the handles move together at the start of the crimping stroke the roller rides up on to the straight surface 43 and reverse movement of the member 20 is now prevented as the roller would wedge between the surface 43 and the bottom of the groove 34 in the member 18. Reversal of movement is only possible when the roller enters the recess 42 by which time the crimping jaws have completed the crimping operation. The full stroke mechanism is applicable to hydraulic or pneumatic crimping machines using spring-loaded pistons.
