A bobbin winder 9 is journalled in a plate 9 closing the needle-bar accommodating head end 1 of the arm of a sewing-machine. A bobbin carrying spindle 17 is rotatably mounted on needle rollers within a sleeve slidable in a collar 11 disposed in a hole in the plate 8. The sleeve has two radial pegs 13 extending through corresponding slots in the collar to permit limited axial movement of the sleeve within the collar. The end of the spindle remote from the bobbin receiving end is provided with two arms 22 having resilient, turned over ends 24. To use the winder, a bobbin 18 is placed on the spindle and the sleeve moved fully to the right within the collar 11 against the action of the bifurcated spring 27, the end 24 of one of the arms 22 then engaging a driving pin 25 mounted on the needle-bar driving crank 5. A bolt 30 disposed in a vertical slot 28 in the plate carries a latch member 29 having bifurcated arms 31 which slip down behind the pegs 13 to hold the spindle in its rightwards, driven position. As thread is wound on to the bobbin it gradually presses up a release segment 37 carried on the bolt 30 until, when the bobbin is full, the legs 31 disengage from the pegs 13 and allow the spring 27 to move the spindle to the left to disengage the drive. When no bobbin is carried on the spindle the thread end is clamped between a spring-urged disc 35 and the release segment 37.
