870,746. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 3, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 30169/59. Class 112 A bobbin winder mechanism comprises a bobbin receiving spindle 9 mounted for endwise movement in a sleeve 4 rotatably mounted in the top plate 1 of a sewing-machine. The spindle has lugs 10 which pass through segmental apertures 8 in the bottom wall 7 of the sleeve and are provided with drive faces 12 which cooperate, when the spindle is forced downwards against the spring 18 with complementary faces on a coupling collar 13 biased upwardly by a spring 13a surrounding the drive shaft 2 and retained thereon by a pin 14 which passes through inclined grooves 15. A latching lever 20 engages a lower collar 26 on the spindle when the latter is raised but when a bobbin is placed on the post 28 which is split lengthwise to frictionally engage the bobbin, and the spindle 9 depressed into driven engagement with the shaft 2 the lever 20 is swung by its torsion spring 23 to engage the upper collar 25. When sufficient thread has been wound on to the bobbin a tripping arm 30 moves the lever 20 off the shoulder 25 and the spindle rises, disengaging itself from the drive shaft. Both the spindle 9 and the collar 13 may be made of a synthetic plastic such as nylon. Specification 632,019 is referred to.
