Be it known that we, DRIKUS SNITZER and MICHAEL KUEHN, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Ups for Sewing-1Vaehines, of which the following is a specifioation, reference being had therein to the aceompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to that elass of takenp devces '0r sewing-maehines in which a rotary take-up in the head of the machine is operated in sueh a manner as to have a differential 01 variable rotary movement; for the purpose of properly eontrolling the threacl With referenoe to the movements of the neeclle.
In earrying 0ur invent-on into eieet we moun'n our rotary cake-u p on a small shaft properly journaled in (he head of the machine, said shaft being providecl with en op erating-arm,with which a pin conneeted with a pitman whieh operates the needle-bar has a loose oonnection in sueh a manner as to impart a differential rotary movement to the take-np shaft. This pin whieh operates the take-up shaft is preferably oarried by an arm attachecl to a bloek whieh is rigid with the needle-bar pitman, so that the rocking movements of the saicl pitman will be imparted to the said arm,thus eausing the pin earried by the latter and whieh is eeeentrie to the crankpin whieh operates the pitman to travel in an elliptical path, and therebyimpart an irregu- 1ar or variable movement to the take-up shaft.

With the parts eonstrueted as above deseribed it will be appareht that when the shaft B is set in motion the pitman O will be eaused t0 operate the needle-bar in the usnal manner, and as the saicl pitman in ts movements is caused to sway or vibrate as it is operated by its crank-pin the pin e, earried by the arm E, whieh is 1igid with the pitman C, will be caused t0 deseribe an elliptiea1 path, and will therefore move in and out in the slot of the arm f of the take-up shaft, and will thus impart a variable rotary movement to the take-up, the said pin 6 being at the inner portion of the slot of the armf at the moment when the take-up is te operate to tighten the loops of needle-thread, thereby imparting a quick rotary moton to the takeup, the said pin 6 being farther outward in the slot of the arm of the take-np shaft during the time when the needle is descending and vvhen the threacl is te be gradually slaakened.
Instead of forming the loose conneetion between the arm f of the take-up shaft and the pin e by slotting ;l1e said arm, the same oper ative result may be eieeted by eonneeting the pin e with the said arn1 by means of a short link, thereby difierentially rotating the takeup in a manner like the connectioneffeoted by means of the slobted arm above described.
The take-up shaft f is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as being so arranged chat its axis is in line with Lhe axis of the driving-shaft B; but, owing to the manner in Which we operate said take-up shaft from the pin 6, eonneoted With the needle-bar-operating pitmanin snob a manner as to travel in an elliptieal patl1, we are enabled to secure a proper differential rotary movement of the take-up with the parts so arranged. The take-np may, however, be so arranged chat: ts axis is somewhai; out of line from the axis of the driving-shaft, as shown in Fig. 4:, and in sueh case, with the IOO pne' carried and operated as shown, the differental movement s of the rotary take-up will be somewha'n increased, so that; it will move more quckly at the moments when the sttches are tightened than with the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It is, however, necessary in actuating a rotary take-up from the needle-bar-operating pitman that the axis of the rake-up shaft should not be fat removed from the axis of the driving-shaft, as would be the case were the take-up mere1y a vibrat-ing one, such as are shown by the takeups of Unit ed States Patents Nos. 399,949 and 420,034, it being, in our opnion, essental, in order to operate the rotary take-up from a device rigid with the needle-bar pit-man, that the axis of the take-up shaft should be in line with the axis of the needle-operrting shaft, or approxirnately s0, as heren shown and descrbed.
Hav'ing thus described our nventon, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sewing-machne take-up mechanisrn consisting of the combnation, with a rotatingdrving-shaft provided With a crank, of a needle-bar, a pitman serving to connect said needle bar With said crank, a rotary take-up, a shaft by which said take-up is carred and which is provided with an operating-arm, the axis of the said take-up shaft being in 1ine with the axis of said drivng-shaft, or approximately s0, as shown and described, and a pin operated from said pitman and having a loose connection with the arm of said take-up sha'ft, and thereby serving to imparta differentialrobary motion t0 said take-up.
2. A sewing-machine take-up mechanism consisting of the combinaton, with a rotating drivingshaft provded with acrank, of a needle-bar, a pitman serving to connect sad needle-bar wi'ch said crank, a r0tary take-up, a shaft by which said take-up is carried and whch is provided with a slotted operatingarm, the axis of the said take-up 'shaft being in lne wth the axs of said drvng-shaft, or approxmately s0, as shcwn and 'descrbed, and a pin operated fron said pitman and engaging the said slotted arm of said take-up shaft, and thereby serving t0 impart a dierential rotary motion t0 said take-up.
